Blog Update

I don't know if you guys have noticed that I have been posted a lot less lately. I wanted to give you an update as to why. I know I don't owe anyone an explanation because my printables are free, but I wanted to let you know how I have been feeling recently.

I started this blog in the hopes that the donations made would help me supplement an income that I would make working outside of my home. It has not. I could start and Etsy shop, but I still wanted to keep planning on a budget possible. So recently I started a part time job as a way to bring in money to the household. This new job has not taken away any of my designing time. I just don't want to design anymore and here is why:

I started this blog making Samplers for the Vertical Erin Condren and the Classic Happy Planner. I was able to create more Samplers and post more frequently only designing for these planners. Then I took on the Big Happy Planner after it was released and I used that planner for only one month because it was too big and haven't used it since. Then came the Carpe Diem Planner. I love these planner inserts and still use them depending on what planner I carry in my purse. Then came the Mini Happy Planner that I used for only one week because it was too small.

Designing free printables for planners that I don't even use has become so overwhelming! To design 5 different planner printables takes me somewhere between 2-4 hours. Sometimes I can get them done fast, sometimes it takes me a while depending on how much effort I want to put into it. I feel like I give and give of myself because I want to make everyone happy, but at what cost to me? I know I sound like I am whining here, but I can't help it...it's how I feel and have felt for the last 6 months.

Getting to the point, here is what I have decided. I am going back to the way it was in the beginning...making Samplers for the Vertical Erin Condren and the Classic Happy Planner only. I will figure out how to adjust/convert the Vertical Erin Condren to fit the Mini Happy Planner and the Classic Happy Planner for the Vertical Carpe Diem, but no more Big Happy Planner.

I will still design the Monthly Headers and Extras for all of the Planners. I am reformatting them so that the days of the week will not be printed on the header anymore. Reformatting them this way will make them more universal as well.  I am going to make the days of the week their own separate sticker so that you can put them where you want, in case you use a European Calendar layout or you use the new Recollections Creative Year Planner. The calendar layout in this planner use to be the same as the Vertical Erin Condren, but in the new Recollections Planner they have reversed notes column on the page. So rather than make a totally different printable or not design for it at all, I will just make this adjustment starting with the October Monthly Kit.

I know some of you will be disappointed that I will not be making Samplers for the planners that you use, but there are so many people designing free printables now. So many!!! When I started my blog 2 1/2 years ago, there were hardly any designing and now my Pinterest feed is full of different blogs that are designing free printables.

Here's the thing you need to know, I seriously love designing planner printables! I have just come to the realization that I need to lighten my load and to be honest, just typing this post has lifted a huge weight off of my chest! I hope that you can understand where I am coming from and know that I would rather design for fewer planners than stop designing at all.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment. Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Edit: I never thought I would get so many comments of support and concern from you guys! I appreciate each and everyone of you and the time you took to leave me such amazing feedback. Right now I am working on and reformatting the Vertical Erin Condren and Classic Happy Planner Samplers to include a second universal page like I have included in past Samplers. I love the 2nd page and when I was designing 5 different planner sizes, 2 pages was so overwhelming, but I want to bring it back since I have lightened my load. The next sampler I am going to make is the one that matches the September Monthly Kit, so keep an eye out for that.

  1. Thanks for all that you do! You're very kind to do all this for free, and your blog is a first choice resource for planner people everywhere. Set up an Etsy shop! You could do both and maybe that could supplement your income!!

    1. You are so kind. I just might see what I can come up with and maybe put something up on Etsy and see how it does.

  2. Honestly I was floored when I noticed how many different planners you were designing for! Do what is best for you. You won't lose traffic. I just ove your printables! They have saved my planner so many weeks when I failed to design my own kit. I would just swing by your page and grab a nice ready to go kit!

  5. You have done such wonderful work and have been so very generous. All you do is very much appreciated. Do what it is that makes you happy because that is what is the priority. I have the original Happy Planner, although due to illness I have not done anything with it for awhile. May God bless you in whatever decisions that you make. Once again......thank you! :)

  9. I am truly grateful for your beautiful designs and the fact that you do them for the Silhouette. I am a huge fan of yours, especially because of that. I love using my silhouette with your designs and have really enjoyed them for about a year now. Thanks for all you do!!

  10. Hi Jessica! I receive your emails, here's a big virtual hug and THANKS for the time you've put into the blog, the designs and sending this message. I believe you have to follow your heart. In a world of social media and "everyone doing it", whatever "it" is doesn't mean you have to do it. Start small again - no pressure from us. I will say when I have slumped in my creative ways of planning, I get one of your emails and feel inspired. I don't always have time to work on it, but I have save some for future use. I follow The Reset Girl on Facebook and believe we can reset our lives, passions and creative goals as often as we need.

    Take care!

  11. Jessica, you are one of the first blogs I found when I started exploring the possibilities of journaling. I was so excited to find a resource that provided different things I could try for FREE. And here I go again. I was using a happy planner, but it just isn't working for me. This week I will be receiving a new horizontal format planner and trying that. The one thing I know I can count on, no matter what planner I am using at the moment, you are one of the resources I know I can count on. Thank you SO MUCH for all that you do. You really should think about at least supplementing your free items with items for sale on Etsy or Amazon or... Anyway, thank you again.
    A loyal fan,
    Cat

  14. Thank you so much for all the energy you spent and for your generosity! I love your designs and I don't even use any of the planners you design them for! I'm pretty sure that people will be able to use and appreciate your work even if you reduce the number of inserts. The important is for you to do what is best for yourself, always. Again, thank you! >>Greetings from Brazil!

  15. Thank you for your awesomeness!! Your blog is the first one I came across when I started using the Classic Happy Planner 2 years ago. I now have a Mini as well, I will make whatever you put out work for what I have. I love all of your stuff and you are my go to for monthly covers :) You are also one of the few people that include a JPG file that I can use with my Cricut <3. Thanks again, and above all, do you!!

  16. I got the email notification about this blog post and right away when I saw the title I had a feeling I knew somewhat of what the post would say. I finally remembered to get on my laptop and as I read it I started to get a knot in my throat and surprising myself I started to cry a little... so I didn't want either of the girls to wake and see mommy upset... I know you understand. I have known you as more than a designer for I think over a year or so... but it's thanks to this blog that I met you. I have had a feeling basically since you started doing things for more planners, and getting specific requests from people that you were not really happy about the blog anymore.

I know you have referred to it as "your child, or baby" and I know you used to get excited putting your samplers up, that was when you were actually using what you created, and you were creating what YOU wanted. I'm sure I have told you enough, I'm a little more straightforward than you, you have a huge heart and you care so much about others that you forget yourself!! I don't want this to come off as I told you so, because it's not that at all. You need to do what YOU want, it's your blog and you said it, your not being paid for all you do, so do what makes you happy!!

If you want to do summer colors or theme in the middle of the winter, then do it. You are talented, we all can agree on that and you have the ability to make what you want when you want. If someone doesn't use something because it doesn't go with this months color scheme.... ok we all know they can still decorate their planner. It's not your job to make something that everyone can be happy with and use. Even full time shop owners can't do that.

Since you started taking on more and more styles I felt you were not going to get the happiness anymore that the blog was supposed to give you. I remember you even did the baby kit with add on's and you had absolutely no need for it, and even did both sexes!!!

Honestly, I'm very surprised this didn't come a lot sooner, after the person stole your work I really thought you were going to just stop. But nope, you did everything you could, even redesigning past kits!!!

I honestly hurt for you then, and I felt then that you weren't getting the happiness and excitement you once got from it, but you went on!!! On one hand I'm upset because I know this took you a long time to decide, and I know your not happy about the blog like you were. But on the other hand I'm honestly happy.

I would love for you to feel that happiness and excitement again, like when you originally did the rainy day kit (you know the one I'm referring to) you used it, it had meaning to you and it made you happy and proud!! That is what I would love to see!!!

Never mind, how often people change their planners!! At some time I am sure you have made something that everyone in the planner community would love to have.

You can't make everyone happy, that's not your job. You can make yourself and your family happy so do whatever it takes to do that. I know you can do it, I believe in you!!

Thank you so much for sharing, you definitely did not need to do this and I'm sure it was hard for you. I hope everyone is understanding and can put themselves in your shoes. Not many have your talent, and honestly I am on etsy daily, it is extremely hard to get a shop owner to do kits for the happy planner, they end up 98% of the time responding giving you the full box dimensions and basically telling you to make the erin condren kit work.... I can not think of one shop that designs for all the planners you have been doing kits for, never mind any free blogs or groups!!!

I apologize that this is so long, I have wanted to catch up with you for a while, I have some books that I wanted to pass on to you too. I hope you understand what all I'm trying to say here... be happy... that's what matters.

I'm happy you will continue the blog though!!! Xoxo miss you!!

  17. You have no reason to apologize! You have been so generous with your time and talent. Please know that it is greatly appreciated!! Your designs are terrific! Your blog is a tremendous resource for planners/journalers. I'm sending you a big huge hug and heartfelt thanks for all that you have done and continue to do!

  18. Thank you for all you do for us. I love your printables, and I appreciate all the hard work you put into them. But you need to do what is right for you, sweetie, really. When it becomes overwhelming, it becomes a 'job' and takes the fun out of it. So lighten your load and keep smiling! We love you!

  19. I want to THANK YOU for all your hard work and time that you have put into this to accommodate all the sizes. But, lets be real, there is just to many to keep up with!!! I can completely understand to getting back to basics for yourself, you need to do whats right for you. I have found I only need one of your samplers and I can resize it to work for me. I love your designs and the fact they are free. I will continue to follow you and wish you all the best in your future plans!!! Again, THANK YOU!!! I love your work!

  20. Hi Jessica! I just want to say that I am thankful for all your hard work in providing printables for FREE. You were one of the first (if not THE first!) blog I discovered almost 2 yrs ago that provided awesome free printables for the HP. And this blog update.. all I can say is:

    You do you, girl!

You have given us so much of your time and talent providing awesome printables for FREE! I am honestly surprised that up to now you still haven't opened an Etsy shop. Seriously, open one! :) I am sure that even though some of your awesome designs will come at a price, tons will still buy it, especially your loyal followers ;) (I would too, but currently shipping to my country, esp from Etsy, is quite a hassle, I think. Plus the payment options lol. But maybe next year! I'm migrating to the US next year -- squee! anyways we're getting side tracked here lol). I know some of the bloggers that offer printables have an Etsy shop as well -- and their followers patronize both. But of course it's still your choice :) Again, you do you! <3

  22. Thank you so much for your time and talent. And thank you also for letting us all know about what is on your heart. I was worried that you weren't posting because something bad had happened. I'm so glad you are OK! I use the big happy planner,so I'm sad to see if go, but I'm grateful for anything you design and will make it work. Everything you do is so beautiful. Thank you again. I can't wait to see what you design next.

  23. Do what is best for you. I love your printables and always link your blog when posting to any social media. Like I saw someone mention, I completely agree that you should try and set up an Etsy. I think you would do great and I would definitely buy! Thanks for all of the awesome freebies you've given!

  24. I adore your printables and manage to make whatever you design work for whatever I'm using. You do it however works for you and I will manage. Not sure if this applies to stickers but printable inserts work in the Mini Happy Planner if printed at 85%. I usually use the monthly universal extras.

  25. I am so happy to have found your blog just a few months ago but have enjoyed using your beautiful samplers. I wish that I was able to give some kind of donation as you deserve so much!!! Thank you again and for your time and providing such amazing designs.

  26. I sincerely hope you set up an Etsy, you really should be charging for these! Or make your donation button much more obvious or repetitious on this site (what's the other one that has those big pink jars, Planner Addiction?). Lots of the Etsy shops charge for the printable! :) Thank you so much for sharing your talent and making a sticker fan out of me, and of course scale back!

  27. Good for you! I absolutely LOVE your printables and use at least some element of them in my custom planner spreads, which I always give you credit :)

  29. I'd like to add my thanks for your efforts and the time it takes to make your wonderful printables. I've been using the ECLP vertical for almost a year and this website is the first one I came across which I fell in love with. Your aesthetic is very close to mine. I really love your work. I totally understand your need to cut back - I'm just thrilled I will still be able to use your work. I've tried designing some of my own. It's WAY harder than I thought it would be (and I'm a die-hard, chronic crafter). So...thank you, thank you, thank you for everything you've done and been thru to bring such beautiful work to your fellow planners. If only I could do what you do...
